What are the different types of pilot licences?

There are various types of pilot licences available, each tailored to specific aviation goals including:

  • PPL - A Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is a European licence that allows you to fly an aircraft privately and with non-commercial passengers and is the first step required to achieve your goal of becoming a commercial pilot.
  • LAPL - A Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) is a UK national licence that allows you to fly an aircraft up to 2,000KG in weight with a maximum of three passengers.
  • CPL - A Commercial Pilot Licence, or CPL, is the initial certificate that permits a pilot to fly an aircraft for compensation or hire. It is the minimum requirement for individuals seeking to work as professional pilots in various sectors of the aviation industry including airlines, charter companies, and flight instruction.
  • ATPL - An Airline Transport Licence (ATPL) is the highest level of pilot licence and is required for individuals seeking to act as a Pilot in Command (PIC) of commercial airliners and other large or complex aircrafts.

Do I need specific equipment?

Your flight school should give you access to all equipment you will need to fly. However, Pilot Starter Kits offer an excellent starter point for aspiring pilots, providing essential tools and resources to kickstart your aviation journey. These comprehensive kits typically include items such as pilot logbooks, navigation tools, flight planning materials, and more.

What are the basic requirements to start learning to fly?

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) outlines basic eligibility requirements for all types of pilot programmes. For example, while a candidate of any age can enrol for a flight programme, you must be 18 years old to obtain a CPL and 17 years old for a PPL. It’s also worth considering the medical standards required.

Which pilot licence is best?

Determining which pilot licence is “best” depends on Your individual aviation goals. However, an Airline Transport Licence (ATPL) is the highest level of pilot licence.

What is the difference between CPL and ATPL?

While a CPL allows you to fly an aircraft as a PIC, you need an ATPL to pilot an aircraft that has a weight over 5,700KG.

What is the difference between CPL and PPL?

While both licences authorise pilots to fly an aircraft, a CPL is geared towards individuals seeking a career in aviation and allows for commercial flying, while the PPL is intended for pilots flying for personal enjoyment.
