The Boeing 727 helped build modern overnight air cargo, and few aircraft represent that legacy better than FedEx Boeing 727 N466FE, known as “Gideon.”

These PlaneTags are crafted from the authentic aluminium skin of this historic trijet, preserving a jet that spent decades flying through the night as part of the FedEx Express fleet. From its early life carrying passengers to its long career as a cargo workhorse, N466FE lived a full and meaningful aviation life.

Built in December 1976, this Boeing 727-225 first entered passenger service under the registration N8874Z, flying for Eastern Air Lines before later operating with Avianca. During this phase of its life, the aircraft carried passengers across domestic and international routes, showcasing the versatility of the Boeing 727 platform.

In October 1992, the aircraft joined the FedEx Express fleet, where it was converted into a dedicated freighter and re-registered as N466FE. As a FedEx aircraft, it became part of the company’s overnight delivery network, flying consistent nighttime routes and reliably moving cargo between hubs and regional markets.

After retirement from active flight service, the aircraft took on a new role as a public exhibit. Known as “Gideon,” it was donated by FedEx and later displayed for many years at the Aerospace Museum of California, where it served as a centerpiece in the museum’s airpark.

Due to extensive corrosion from long-term outdoor display, the aircraft was carefully disassembled in late 2025. The nose and cockpit section were preserved and moved indoors for future restoration and display, while other portions of the aircraft were responsibly repurposed or scrapped. Portions of the original aircraft skin were saved and transformed into PlaneTags, ensuring that Gideon’s story continues to be shared.

About the Boeing 727

First flown in 1963, the Boeing 727 was designed to bring jet service to airports with shorter runways and limited infrastructure. Its three-engine configuration, T-tail, and built-in rear airstairs made it highly adaptable and reliable.

Over time, the 727 became one of the most successful jetliners ever built, with more than 1,800 produced. Many went on to second careers as freighters, where their durability and ability to handle frequent cycles made them ideal for cargo operations. The Boeing 727 became a cornerstone of overnight shipping during the growth of the air cargo industry.
