The Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker is a twin-engine supersonic supermaneuverable fighter aircraft of Soviet origin, developed by Sukhoi. It was designed to compete directly with large fourth-generation jet fighters from the United States, such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. The aircraft boasts a range of 3,530 kilometers (1,910 nautical miles), can carry heavy ordnance, features advanced avionics, and exhibits exceptional maneuverability. The primary mission of the Su-27 is air superiority, and its subsequent variants are capable of executing nearly all aerial combat operations. It was developed to complement the Mikoyan MiG-29.

The Su-27 was introduced into service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1985. Its main function was to provide long-range air defense against American strategic bombers, including the Rockwell B-1B Lancer and the Boeing B-52G and H Stratofortress, thereby safeguarding the Soviet coastline from aircraft carriers and offering long-range fighter escort for Soviet heavy bombers like the Tupolev Tu-95, Tupolev Tu-22M, and Tupolev Tu-160.

The Su-27 has evolved into a family of aircraft, which includes the Su-30, a two-seat, dual-role fighter designed for all-weather air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions, and the Su-33, a naval fleet defense interceptor intended for operation from aircraft carriers. Additional variants comprise the side-by-side two-seat Su-34 strike/fighter-bomber and the Su-35, an enhanced air superiority and multi-role fighter. A thrust-vectoring variant known as the Su-37 was also developed. Furthermore, the Shenyang J-11 is a Chinese version of the Su-27 produced under license
