The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American single-engine, supersonic air superiority fighter that was widely utilized as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War.
Created as a day fighter by Lockheed as part of the "Century Series" of fighter aircraft for the United States Air Force (USAF), it evolved into an all-weather multirole aircraft in the early 1960s and was manufactured by several other countries, achieving extensive service beyond the United States.

Following a series of interviews with Korean War fighter pilots in 1951, Kelly Johnson, the lead designer at Lockheed at the time, decided to counter the trend of increasingly larger and more complex fighters by designing a simple, lightweight aircraft that excelled in altitude and climb performance. On 4 March 1954, the Lockheed XF-104 made its inaugural flight, and on 26 February 1958, the production variant was commissioned by the USAF. Just a few months later, it was deployed during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis as a deterrent against Chinese MiG-15 and MiG-17 fighters. Issues with the General Electric J79 engine and a preference for fighters with greater ranges and heavier payloads resulted in a brief service period with the USAF, although it was reactivated during the Berlin Crisis of 1961 and the Vietnam War, where it completed over 5,000 combat sorties.

Despite its short tenure with the USAF, the Starfighter achieved significantly greater success with other NATO and allied nations. In October 1958, West Germany chose the F-104 as its main fighter aircraft. Canada soon followed suit, along with the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, and Italy. These European nations established a construction consortium that represented the largest international manufacturing program in history up to that time, although the Starfighter's export success was tainted in 1975 by revelations of bribe payments made by Lockheed to various foreign military and political figures to secure purchase contracts. Ultimately, the Starfighter served with fifteen air forces, but its poor safety record affected its reputation.
