The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft from the United States, initially developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Originally designed as a day fighter for air superiority, it has transformed into a highly effective all-weather multirole aircraft. Since the approval of production in 1976, over 4,600 units have been manufactured. Although the U.S. Air Force is no longer acquiring new units, enhanced versions continue to be produced for international customers. In 1993, General Dynamics divested its aircraft manufacturing division to the Lockheed Corporation, which subsequently merged with Martin Marietta in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin.
Key characteristics of the Fighting Falcon include a frameless bubble canopy that provides excellent visibility, a side-mounted control stick that facilitates maneuvering, and an ejection seat that is reclined 30 degrees from vertical to mitigate the impact of g-forces on the pilot. It also features the pioneering use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system, contributing to its agility. The F-16 is equipped with an internal M61 Vulcan cannon and has 11 hardpoints for the attachment of weapons and other mission-related equipment. While its official designation is "Fighting Falcon," the aircraft is often referred to as "Viper" by its pilots and crews, due to its resemblance to a viper snake and the fictional Colonial Viper starfighter from the television series Battlestar Galactica, which was airing when the F-16 was introduced into service.

Beyond its active roles in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, the F-16 is also utilized by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team and serves as an adversary/aggressor aircraft for the United States Navy. Additionally, the F-16 has been acquired by the air forces of 25 other countries. As of 2015, it was recognized as the most widely used fixed-wing aircraft in military operations worldwide.
