The Boeing 727 is a midsized, narrow-body, three-engine jet aircraft manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes from the early 1960s until 1984. It has the capacity to accommodate between 149 and 189 passengers, and later variants are capable of flying distances of up to 2,700 nautical miles (5,000 km) without stopping. Designed for short to medium-haul flights, the 727 is able to operate from relatively short runways at smaller airports. It is powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines located beneath the T-tail, with one engine on each side of the rear fuselage and a central engine that connects via an S-duct to an inlet at the base of the fin. The 727 is the only trijet aircraft produced by Boeing.

The 727 was developed following the 707, a quad-jet airliner, sharing similarities in its upper fuselage cross-section and cockpit design. The 727-100 made its maiden flight in February 1963 and commenced service with Eastern Air Lines in February 1964; the extended 727-200 took to the skies in July 1967 and began operations with Northeast Airlines that December. The 727 became a fundamental component of airlines' domestic route networks and was also utilized for short- and medium-range international flights. Various versions of the 727 were produced, including passenger, freighter, and convertible models.

Production of the 727 was extensive throughout the 1970s, with the final unit being completed in 1984. As of July 2013, there were 109 Boeing 727s (5× 727-100s and 104× -200s) still in commercial operation across 34 airlines. Due to airport noise regulations, many 727s have been fitted with hush kits.
