The Grumman F6F Hellcat is a World War II American fighter aircraft designed for carrier operations. It was created to succeed the earlier F4F Wildcat and to combat the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Throughout the latter part of the Pacific War, it emerged as the primary fighter for the United States Navy. In achieving this status, it outperformed its quicker rival, the Vought F4U Corsair, which faced initial challenges related to visibility and landing on aircraft carriers
