History
Tracing its lineage to the formation of the Royal Flying Corps at Farnborough in May 1912, No.II(AC) Squadron holds the distinction of being both the most senior squadron in the Royal Air Force and the world's first fixed-wing aircraft unit. Known as 'Shiny Two', the squadron became the first British unit to cross the Channel at the start of the Great War, developing expertise in aerial reconnaissance and Army cooperation that would define its role throughout decades of service.The squadron's impressive 27-year association with the Panavia Tornado began in 1988, operating the type through some of the final chapters of the Cold War. During this period, the most visually striking aircraft were those adorned with temporary winter camouflage for Arctic operations in Norway. These combined defence and readiness exercises brought together aircraft from multiple nations to demonstrate capabilities against potential Eastern Bloc threats in the high north of Europe.The Tornado GR.1A represented a dedicated reconnaissance platform, comprising 16 converted GR.1 airframes and 14 newly constructed aircraft. ZA371/C exemplified the squadron's operational readiness during the 1995 Norwegian deployment, when these distinctively camouflaged Tornados proved their worth in challenging Arctic conditions.
