    Alpha Industries History

In October, 1959, more than 50 years ago, Alpha Industries began its operations making military clothing in the basement of a rented Knoxville, Tennessee factory using leased sewing machines and only a few employees.   The first few years were very difficult for newly formed Alpha because it was a time of peace and the U.S. Defence Department purchased only small quantities of military clothing.  However, the outstanding quality of Alpha's clothing quickly came to the Defence Department's attention and as America's  need for military clothing increased as the Vietnam conflict deepened, Alpha's growth as a manufacturer for the Defence Department rapidly accelerated.

Alpha specialized in manufacturing many types of jackets and pants for U.S. military forces.  As the years went by America's Defence Forces came to rely more and more on Alpha's expertise to produce U.S. Air Force and Naval Aviation flight jackets, Army and Marine Corps field jackets and a host of military pants and other clothing.  During this time Alpha manufactured over 40 million garments for the U.S. military ranging from simple hoods to complicated cold weather Gore-Tex parkas.

Although Alpha made many different types of clothing the company became most associated with several jackets that became classics of American fashion.  Two of these jackets--- the MA-1 flight jacket and the M-65 field jacket-- were almost exclusively made by Alpha for the military and Alpha was instrumental in working with the U.S. military designers to improve their performance and design.  Subsequently when these garments migrated from their military roots into globally popular casual or street wear styles Alpha, as the authentic producer of the MA-1 and M-65 for the military, also became famous in the public's mind for these styles.

    A good flying jacket

I've just received the jacket and, at first glance, it fits well and the pockets, zips and pen pockets are ergonomically fitted. I've been after a good flying jacket for a few years since my old RAF one expired, and this looks like it will be a great replacement.

    An updated classic

I was rather surprised that there were no reviews of this classic jacket on this site, so, I thought I may as well add one myself. I already own two Alpha Industries MA-1 jackets, one in Sage Green shade from 1983 (MIL-J-82790E) - and the other in Silver-grey (MIL-J-82790I) from 1996. Those two jackets served me well – so much so that, for sentimental reasons, I never had the heart to throw them out when I stopped wearing them. Clearly, I am a firm fan of this jacket model - but I thought it might be useful to others to compare my brand new Alpha MA-1 to those two earlier examples.

    Pros:
My new MA-1 is packaged as a quality fashion item rather than a utilitarian ‘government issue’ item as they always used to be.
The leather pull tab on the main zip slider is made of thicker leather than the equivalent item on either of my legacy jackets.
The exposed parts of both zips are in a very attractive gun-metal grey finish.
The windflap has a very neat embroidered Alpha Industries logo.
The jacket is just as warm and comfortable to wear as the previous MA-1’s I have owned.

    Quibbles:
The front pockets are positioned slightly further away from the main zip and the curve of the top of the windflap is noticeably ‘squarer’. Both of these elements make the jacket feel slightly different the first few times you wear it.
The two inside pockets are shallower than on earlier iterations. They accommodate less gear than previously but, given that most people will only use those pockets for their wallet and loose change, this is not really a negative for all practical purposes.
My legacy jackets were both manufactured in Knoxville , Tennessee, U.S. of A. This new jacket is manufactured in Germany! It may be genuine US design but the fact that it’s ‘imported’ does disappoint a tad in terms of authenticity.

    Can’t see the point of:
New MA-1’s now have a ‘Remove Before flight’ streamer attached to the sleeve pocket zip slider. Presumably, this is so potential purchasers can spot genuine MA-1s on the rack (?). For all practical purposes, this is a pointless visual gimmick. The wording on the streamer isn’t even embroidered – it’s silk-screened on, so will probably wash away in the rain! This streamer does not ‘add value’ in any way I can discern.
They are still fitting the same old plastic pocket protectors inside the pencil/pen channels on the outside of the sleeve pocket. Is anyone really a fan of these things? The Flightstore description of this jacket states that: “This current version has been kept as close as possible to the classic specification which debuted in 1950”. But, in the 50’s weren’t these pocket protectors made from brass? To bother to include them, but still in 1990's plastic style, does not seem overly authentic to me.

Any criticisms I have are very minor when compared to the brilliant comfort, warmth, light weight and unparalleled utility of the MA-1. The fact that it has five very usable pockets (the sleeve pocket is ideal for your keys, by the way) puts it in a category populated by very few other garments. The MA-1 still feels like ‘equipment’ rather than ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ fashion. Long may that continue.
