The 777 made its commercial debut with United Airlines on June 7, 1995. It has garnered more orders than any other wide-body airliner; as of November 2016, 60 customers had ordered a total of 1,902 aircraft across all variants, with 1,446 of those delivered. The most prevalent and successful variant is the 777-300ER.
It stands as the largest twinjet in the world, typically accommodating between 314 and 396 passengers, with a range spanning from 5,240 to 8,555 nautical miles (9,704 to 15,844 km). Commonly known as the 'Triple Seven', it is characterised by the largest-diameter turbofan engines found on any aircraft, six wheels on each main landing gear, a fully circular fuselage cross-section, and a blade-shaped tail cone. Designed in collaboration with eight major airlines, the 777 was intended to replace older wide-body airliners and to fill the capacity gap between Boeing's 767 and 747 models. As Boeing's inaugural fly-by-wire airliner, it features computer-mediated controls and was the first commercial aircraft to be entirely designed using computer-aided design.
As of 2014, the 777 is produced in two fuselage lengths. The original 777-200 variant commenced commercial operations in 1995, followed by the extended-range 777-200ER in 1997. The longer 777-300, which measures 33.25 ft (10.1 m) longer, was introduced in 1998. The initial versions of the 777-200, -200ER, and -300 are powered by General Electric GE90, Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines. The extended-range 777-300ER and ultra long-range 777-200LR variants were launched in 2004 and 2006, respectively, while the 777F, a freighter variant, made its debut in February 2009; all these variants are equipped with high-output GE90 engines and extended raked wingtips. The 777-200LR holds the title of the longest-range airliner in the world, capable of flying more than halfway around the globe, and it also holds the record for the longest non-stop distance flown by a commercial aircraft.
