Jet Engines is an excellent reference book for aviation professionals and enthusiasts who wish to broaden their knowledge of jet engine technology and its associated subjects. The author provides a comprehensive explanation of the components that constitute a gas turbine aero-engine, examining both the design and function of all engine parts.
The book covers turbojet, turboprop and turbofan designs in both civilian and military aircraft and provides examples of the engine-to-aircraft relationships used to follow the application of certain engine types to operational requirements. All descriptions are written in a straightforward style and the text is amplified by many diagrams, plans and cutaway illustrations.
This book lets you see how a real engine operates, not how an idealized, thermodynamically perfect, one does. It's a shame that more books on jet engine technology do not touch on the real world aspects of designing, constructing, and maintaining a turbine engine like this one does. It is a little brief, but would complement a good book on propulsion thermodynamics.
Perhaps the most friendly book on the complex mechanics of the modern turbine engine. The author breaks down the stages of the working jet engine chapter by chapter beginning with intake follow by compressor. A must reading for any commercial pilot upgrading to turbine engine, power plant mechanics trainees, or anyone who is interested in fundamental workings of a jet turbine engine.
