PR Mosquito Mk. XVI - NS637
The fast, high flying Mosquito with its long range was an ideal PR (Photo Reconnaissance) aircraft. Painted ‘PRU Blue’ to avoid enemy detection they flew PR missions across the High Artic and Europe.
The product includes a designer swing tag featuring original aerial photographs of the German battle ship ‘Admiral von Tirpitz’ capsized in Tromsø Fjord, Norway.
Taken on 22nd March 1945 by Squadron Leader F. L. Dodd DSO, DFC, AFC and Flight Lieutenant E. Hill DFC, DFM from unarmed Mosquito PR Mark XVI, NS637 of 544 Squadron RAF operating from RAF Benson.
This was the longest PR sortie of WW2 – 10.5 hours.
The Tirpitz had earlier been successfully attacked by Squadrons 617 & 9 RAF using ‘Tall Boy’ 12,000 lb (5,443kg) bombs on November 12th, 1944.
