Blackstar Short Sunderland Mk III T-Shirt - Last XL

On March 10th, 1944 Sunderland Mk. III EK591 "2U" operated by 422 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force was enroute to escort convoy SC154 when 380 miles west of Ireland it spotted U-boat U-625 on the surface at 52⁰ 35' N 20⁰ 19'W.

 U-625 was a Type VIIC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine, commanded by 25 year old Oberleutnant sur Zee Siegfried Straub. U-625 elected to stay on the surface and fight with it's anti-aircraft guns. Piloted by Flight Lieutenant Sid W Butler the flying boat engaged the U-boat with depth charges and machine guns from low level.

After submerging briefly the U-boat was forced to return to the surface. Straub signalled "Good bombfish" (good bombing) and abandoned ship. The crew took to the life rafts but did not survive the night in the North Atlantic.
