RANT XL Training CD Software
Inlcudes Flight Planner
RANT XL Release 2 is the latest, international version of the Radio Aids Navigation Tutor and provides all the ground training a trainee pilot, who has never seen a VOR or NDB, needs to progress to being able to navigate the most complicated radio-aids navigation task - whether en-route or in the terminal area. Here is a completely re-engineered package which contains the tutorials and exercises that have made RANT so popular as a training tool but which has many new features and has been brought right up-to-date with photo-realistic instruments, including the Bendix/King Silver Crown range, and actual en-route, approach and departure charts, in association with EAG Aerad.

RANT XL has been written by Steve Oddy, an experienced ex-RAF and civilian instructor who is now a CAA staff examiner. He has used a progressive teaching format to allow users to build their knowledge in steps.

Getting Started

To start using RANT XL and learning the black art of radio aids navigation couldn’t be simpler. Go straight to the tutorial section and work your way through in the language of your choice. You can accept the photo-realistic instruments we have selected as the default or you can go the NAVFITS section. There you can select from a number of proprietary instrument configurations ranging from a simple DI/OBS up to modern EFIS presentations with RNAV and GPS. Your selection can be modified further by altering the presentation and functionality of the instruments. RANT XL is the only program we know that can simulate ADF dip (this was included for masochists!). Save this to a new file and then the exercises and practice will be based upon your choice! More than 40 tutorials cover the complete spectrum of radnav techniques.

Initial tutorials describe the instruments and their functions, then progress to basic radnav techniques leading up to NDB/VOR joins, holds and ILS procedures. In  association with Aerad we have a section on interpreting approach charts and there are also tutorials on mental dead-reckoning and Morse. Once a radnav tutorial is completed that technique can then be practised in the appropriate EXERCISE section. The computer will pick a task, for example fly inbound on a certain track to a beacon, which you will then attempt. You may monitor your progress on the screen or have your position hidden until the end of the exercise as you wish. Because the task is chosen at random there are an unlimited number of exercises that can be flown. RANT XL is an excellent training tool both for private pilots and those in a more formal training environment. During any exercise, or flying in the practice mode, a recording may be made of your progress (or otherwise!) and saved for later playback. This is particularly useful for instructors who can set work for students or demonstrate the classic NDB entry and hold. Exercises exist for all procedures, probably the most useful being the approach and departure from selected aerodromes. Here you are able to fly the aircraft using an  on-screen Aerad plate and toggle between the plate and the map screen to monitor your progress. Wind can be selected or chosen at random with the option of real or forecast wind (varying slightly as it does in the real world). Over eighty exercises are included covering all of the popular UK Instrument Rating Test destinations plus some European, New Zealand and US airfields, but additional libraries of approach/departure plates and navexes can be created by the user using the PROCEDURES BUILDER.

Practice make perfect

Once the basics of needle-navigation have been mastered then why not go to the PRACTICE section where the world is your limit (well as far as your maps extend anyway!). Here you can fly from any chosen start point. Do what you like, go where you like. You can tune in any beacon on-screen directly by clicking on the beacon with the mouse pointer or by dialling in the frequency, ident the coding, and fly a complete exercise from departure to arrival, or just do the bit that interests you most. Zoom in/out, move at Turbo speed and move instantly to anywhere on the map.

If you are practising within the UK, Ireland or North Western Europe  you can swap to a display using genuine Aerad en-route charts.

Tools

Included in RANT XL is a GAZETTEER which allows sophisticated, cross-referenced searches of the map database. There's also a wind component calculator, a conversion calculator and a map editor enable the user to make amendments/additions to the map database.

In both packages we've included GPS connectivity. If you have a Garmin GPS you can  upload and download routes, tracks and waypoints. Download your GPS track and watch your flight's progress using RANT's playback facilities.

In the Flight Planner there are even more tools, including a TAF decoder, magnetic variation calculator and night flying planner.

RANT Flight Planner

Included the the RANT XL package is the RANT Flight Planner - a fully featured navigation planner for use in conjunction with RANT XL. Using the same database as RANT XL you can enter your navigation route, either in a table or graphically and let the program calculate all the headings, times and fuel remaining. It can even accept a different wind for each leg. RANT Flight Planner shows you a thumbnail sketch of the route and a diversion finder finds a suitable airfield and plans the leg for diversion as well.

You can print a full VFR or IFR pilots log (PLOG), and an ICAO Flight Plan can be produced for the trip and edited on-screen before being printed out. Ever wondered how to decode a TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) or METAR? The weather decoder will help you here. RANT Flight Planner can be configured to reflect your aircraft’s performance as well as weight and balance. So once you have set up the program for your own particular aircraft all you have to do is enter the waypoints and the wind and RANT Flight Planner will take care of the rest - print it out and then you fly it using RANT …all on-screen. This facility is extremely useful for those about to embark upon an Instrument Rating Test as you can practise the routes on the computer beforehand.
