The JAR ATPL (A) General Navigation examination requires a competency in the calculations of distance, direction, speed, and time. It also requires a detailed understanding of maps and charts, including their properties and limitations. This volume takes the prospective Airline Transport Pilot from basic navigational and plotting skills to the principles and application of Inertial Navigation Systems (INS). Not only does this volume prepare the student for the General Navigation examination, it also discusses the practical aspects of navigation that might be encountered during commercial airline operations.

This new 2005 manual is part of the most current set of JAA ATPL training books on the market. The philosophy of these manuals is to train pilots to fly safely and competently, not just pass the exams. To this end, the material is thorough and comprehensive, yet the books utilise full-color graphics and diagrams that make complex topics easier to grasp. Navigation for Pilots provides a complete study pack and practice questions for the subject of navigation as applicable to the current Joint European Airline Pilot's Licence whilst at the same time providing all the navigation basics needed by the trainee Private Pilot. The author assumes that the reader has now knowledge of the subject and works from the basics throughout.
Although modern educational techniques support the use of calculators, the theme of the book is to encourage the development of a mental checking system to determine the parameters within which the answer must lie. The benefit of this is to develop an ability to cope with navigational problems in flight without recourse to electronic aids - a great asset during single pilot operations.

This book, the third in the series, has been produced primarily to assist an applicant for a Private Pilot's Licence in the study for the Navigation examination. It is not intended as a complete course of study, but is designed to act as a guide to the main points in the syllabus. However, it is also intended to help thse who have already passsed the examination by giving them a document to which they can refer in order to navigate safely and practically.

In a departure from the other volumes, the book also includes suggestions for practical airbourne navigation, which are intended for use both for students and qualified pilots. They are not intended to replace advice from a student's own instructor. However, the book suggests methods which the author has found practical.
The most important parts of the syllabus, especially those relating directly to safety, are covered in detail. However, the coverage of parts which the author considers less vital is only sufficient to give a basic understanding of general structure. To cover the whole syllabus, or indeeed to fly with a igh level of safety, more detailed knowledge is required, and pilot should struve to learn as musch about their aircraft and its environment as possible. Pilots must refer to the Aeronautical Information Publication and other documents for accuarcy and confirmation before flight. This is especially true because this book is not amended as legislation changes.
