Flightwise Volume 1
Principles of aircraft flight

This book is a great read for the general aircraft enthusiast, explaining the principles of flight without scaring you off with oodles of complex calculus. While the author's lengthy explanations can occasionally prove a little trying for the more scientifically minded (ie. engineering students), the text consistently raises and then answers the very questions you find yourself asking.

The Flightwise books provide the aviation enthusiast or professional with a deep insight into the principles of aircraft flight. They take the average reader, with no particular scientific background, through the entire spectrum of how and why an aircraft will fly. Volume 1 examines aerodynamic force, pressure and energy, explaining how the wing generates the lift required to support an aircraft in flight and how its design will vary according to the flying task involved

Comment

This is a very good book indeed. It can be a bit trying if you have some technical knowledge: some of the basic stuff can challenge you even if you have the background though. The science can jump from the easy to the demanding, and in large steps, but if you can keep track of it then the description is excellent and the author gets the principles across beautifully. Buy it! An excellent read for all aircraft enthusiasts
