The story of a small group of enthusiasts, who against all odds, brought a rare and valuable PBY-5A Catalina amphibious flying boat to New Zealand, is now re-released on DVD.
This colourful documentary tells the Catalina saga, from its shaky beginnings to the final arrival in New Zealand of a significant piece of aviation heritage. Lots of great Catalina footage throughout, including dramatic shots of the sad loss of their first aircraft in the middle of the Pacific, plus stunning film of Z-CAT, (now ZK-PBY) amongst breathtaking New Zealand scenery.
Essential viewing for historian and Catalina dreamer alike!
The Handley Page Herald was a tough, reliable, feederliner that earned respect from all who flew it, but never gained the success it really deserved. This DVD uses the manufacturer's cine film archive and modern digital video to bring you fascinating details of the Herald's development and service history.
The Heralds story starts in 1955, when it first flew with four piston engines. These were eventually replaced by two Dart turbo-props, to enable it to compete with the similarly powered Fokker F27 Friendship.
Handley Page then sent the Herald on several exacting sales tours to places as far apart as Peru and the Philippines. Fully restored cine film from the Companys archives brings you Heralds in action on these trips, which include some interesting propliners in the background. Subsequent operations with Sadia in Brazil, BEA in Scotland, Channel Express at Stansted and with various other operators including Bavaria, Globe Air and Itavia are also featured.
A mock up of the military HP124 with an upswept tail, rather like an Andover, is also shown, together with Malaysian and Jordanian Air Force Heralds.
A veteran pilot also gives a guided tour of the cockpit and flight instruments of a preserved Herald, providing a real insight into flying in an era well before todays glass cockpits.
From as far back as 1980, aviation journalist and photographer Ron Mak, and later on his brother Chris, recorded South American propliners in action on cine film and ultimately on digital video.
Using the latest film and video restoration techniques, this DVD has some stunning images of big props at work in Venezuela, Guatemala, Nicaragua and especially Colombia.
The highlights of twenty years of propliner action have some superb C46s in both Nicaragua and Colombia, including a landing at an island airstrip. Villavicencio, Colombia had dozens of DC3s plus DC6s, C46s and AN32s and even a Catalina. Chris and Rons superb airside access brings it all to you in great close up action.
With thrilling rides on a DC3 and DC6, one-engined landings, a low-level beat up by a DC3 and one of the last operational Caravelles, this DVD is a must for any vintage airliner enthusiast.
Unlike the final days of steam railways, the passing of working propliners seems to have gone largely unrecorded. So, we're very grateful to John Tansley for capturing them on video during the late 80s and early 90s.
A few years ago, avion video digitally remastered and enhanced the best of John's material and produced two programmes Big Props Europe and Big Props USA.
Now, re-released on a double DVD set that gives the best possible picture quality at a great price - far cheaper than buying the two videos!
Here are the highlights from both programmes.

Remember when you came home from an airport with your ears ringing from the sound of Rolls Royce Darts and Tynes? You'll get the same effect from watching this video featuring nothing but Viscounts and Vanguards!
We take a look at major Viscount operators such as BEA and British Midland, together with 70's services by Cambrian and Northeast. All that action is taken from expertly restored cine film. Similar material brings us Vanguards operating for BEA, Trans Canada Airlines and Invicta International.
Moving on to the 1980s and 90s there's an in-depth look at the Parcelforce operations at Coventry with Viscounts in three different liveries and Air Bridge/Hunting Clan Vanguards. We're on board a Viscount flying from Belfast to Coventry, and in the cockpit for the final approach and landing.
The last Viscount flight from Heathrow, a V700 flight testing at Antwerp, air to air with London European's V806 - it's Vickers Prop Heaven - don't miss it!

Whether you're an armchair pilot, a computer flight simulator pilot or an airline or military pilot of the future - this DVD is for you. Perhaps you've flown as a passenger, been to an airshow, used a computer flight simulator and asked yourself the question, "Could I learn to do it for real?"
The short answer is yes. Most people can be taught to fly. But to be safe and legal, you have to do a course with a recognised flight training organisation. However, if you want to know how to fly a plane and understand what is going on in the cockpit at all stages of flight, this DVD will show you. Throughout all the video sections, you will be guided by Boeing 767 pilot and Civial Aviation Authority Instructor and Examiner, Lee Hearn.
The aircraft you will learn to fly is a Piper Warrior, one of the most popular training plane sin the world. On this DVD you will learn how to check-out" the aircraft, start up, taxi, take-off, fly manoeuvres, navigate, fly on instruments and then make a safe landing.
Each section is designed to build on your knowledge as you prgress. Filmed in High Definition, but playable on any DVD machine and from upto 7 camera ppositions inside and out, this is a must for flying enthusaists everywhere.
